When JPG to PNG is the right choice

Converting JPG to PNG does not make a photo look better. It makes a copy that will not get any worse. That matters more often than you might think:

  • Editing. Every time a JPG is saved, it loses a little more detail. A PNG can be opened, edited and saved as often as you like with no new loss.
  • Apps and sites that ask for PNG. Some design tools, app stores, game engines and upload forms accept only PNG files.
  • Adding transparency later. JPG cannot hold see-through pixels. Turn the photo into a PNG first, then cut out the background in your editor.
  • Screenshots saved as JPG that you want to mark up and share again without more blur.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPG or JPEG files on the drop area or press Select JPG images. For a whole folder, drop it there or use Select a folder. Files in sub-folders come along and hidden files are skipped.
  2. There is no quality to choose. PNG output is always lossless. Press Convert to PNG.
  3. Read the result line, compare the first image with the before and after slider, then press Download PNG for one file or Download all as ZIP for several.

A batch can hold up to 300 images, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels, which covers photos from any phone or camera. Up to four files convert at once, depending on your device.

Why the PNG is bigger

Be ready for a larger file. A PNG made from a JPG is almost always bigger, often by a lot. JPG keeps photos small by throwing detail away, while PNG stores every pixel exactly as it is. The converter cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost, so blocky edges from heavy compression stay in the PNG.

To keep the size down, each file goes through OxiPNG. It picks the smallest bit depth and palette that fits the image without changing a single pixel. Even so, if all you want is a smaller photo for a website, PNG is not the format for that. You can convert JPG to WebP or convert JPG to AVIF and get files far smaller than the original JPG.

Phone photos, color and privacy

Phones often store a photo's rotation in its EXIF data instead of in the pixels. This JPG to PNG converter applies it, so the PNG comes out the right way up in every app. Color profiles are converted to sRGB, so colors stay the same on other screens.

The PNG carries no metadata. The camera model and the GPS location saved in the original photo are gone, which makes a photo to PNG conversion a simple way to share a picture without saying where it was taken. Nothing is uploaded either. The work happens in Web Workers in your browser, as the privacy policy explains.
