How to convert AVIF to PNG

  1. Drop your AVIF files on the drop area, or press Select AVIF images. You can also press Select a folder or drag a whole folder in. Sub-folders come along and hidden files are skipped.
  2. Press Convert to PNG. Each image turns into a PNG on your own device, up to four at a time.
  3. Check the result. A total line shows the size before and after, a slider compares the first image with its PNG, and every file lists its own size change.
  4. Press Download PNG for a single file, or Download all as ZIP for several. On a computer you can also scan a QR code to send the result to your phone.

Why people need an AVIF to PNG converter

Many websites now use AVIF because it makes small files. So a picture you save from a web page often lands on your disk as an .avif file. Then the trouble starts: a lot of photo apps, editors and upload forms still do not open AVIF.

PNG opens almost everywhere. Converting AVIF to PNG is the quickest way to open an AVIF file in a program that refuses it, and to edit it without losing anything on the way.

Transparency and quality stay

If your AVIF has a see-through background, the PNG keeps it. A logo with a clear background stays clear, so you can place it on any color. You get AVIF to PNG with transparency in one step, with nothing to switch on.

PNG is a lossless format. The converter writes every decoded pixel exactly as it is. It then runs OxiPNG, which picks the smallest bit depth and color palette that still holds the same pixels. Not a pixel changes.

Why the PNG is bigger than the AVIF

Expect the PNG to be much larger than the AVIF. AVIF is a lossy format that drops detail the eye barely sees and packs the rest very tightly. PNG keeps every pixel, so it cannot be that small. This is normal. If you need a small file to share, a JPG is usually the better pick: try the AVIF to JPG converter. To go the other way later, you can convert PNG to AVIF again.

What happens to your images

The AVIF to PNG conversion runs in your browser and your images are never uploaded. Your browser opens the AVIF itself in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or newer. On an older browser that cannot read AVIF, a built-in decoder takes over. It is libaom compiled to WebAssembly, so the page still works.

A few things are cleaned up for you:

  • Photos taken sideways are turned the right way up.
  • Color profiles are converted to sRGB, and HDR or 10 and 12 bit AVIF becomes normal 8 bit color.
  • Camera details, GPS location and other metadata are removed.

Limits

For bulk AVIF to PNG work, you can convert up to 300 images in one batch, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels. With more than five files the list turns into small thumbnail tiles.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert other formats on this page? Yes. It also takes PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. The file type is read from the file's bytes, not from its name, so a file with the wrong extension still works.

What about animated AVIF? You get the first frame as a still PNG.

Can I get a different format instead of PNG? Yes. Switch the output to WebP, AVIF, JPG or SVG. For a smaller file that keeps transparency, you can also convert PNG to WebP. See every image tool for more.

Is AVIF to PNG online free? Yes, with no sign-in and no upload.
