How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG files on the drop area, or press Select PNG images. To convert a whole set, press Select a folder or drop the folder itself. Sub-folders come along and hidden files are skipped.
  2. Choose a quality. High is the default and suits most images. Pick Lossless when every pixel has to stay exactly as it was.
  3. Press Convert to WebP. Up to four images are processed at the same time, depending on your device.
  4. Check the result, then press Download WebP for one file or Download all as ZIP for several.

Why WebP beats PNG on the web

PNG is a lossless format. That makes it great for logos, icons and screenshots, but a photo or a large hero image saved as PNG can weigh several megabytes. WebP was made by Google for the web. It keeps the same sharp edges and the same transparency in far fewer bytes, so pages load faster and do better on page speed tests. For photos stored as PNG, the drop in size is often dramatic.

Every current browser shows WebP, and Safari has done so since 2020. You can put the new files on a website without a fallback for almost every visitor.

Lossless, High or Smaller

This PNG to WebP converter gives you three choices.

  • Lossless keeps every pixel. The WebP is a perfect copy of your PNG, only lighter. Use it for pixel art, master files or anything you plan to edit again.
  • High uses libwebp at quality 90 with sharp color conversion. Side by side, the result looks the same as the original. For logos and screenshots with few colors, the tool switches to near-lossless WebP when that comes out about as small.
  • Smaller gives the smallest file. It is fine for web pages and chats, but very fine details may soften.

If you came looking for png to webp lossless, the first option is the one you want. The other two trade a little accuracy you cannot see for a much lighter file.

Transparent PNG to WebP

Transparency is kept in every mode. A logo on a see-through background stays see-through, with the same soft edges and drop shadows. That is the main reason to pick WebP over JPG for graphics, since a JPG fills the background with a solid color. If an app really needs a JPG, you can convert PNG to JPG instead.

Bulk conversion for a whole site

You can add up to 300 images per batch, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels. With more than five files, the list turns into small thumbnail tiles so it stays easy to scan. When the batch is done, a total line tells you how much space you saved, every file shows its own size change, and a before and after slider lets you compare the first image.

The page also accepts JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP, and you can switch the output to AVIF, JPG, PNG or SVG. For even smaller files on modern browsers, try PNG to AVIF.

Your images stay on your device

This is a png to webp online tool that never uploads anything. The work happens in Web Workers in your browser, using libwebp compiled to WebAssembly, the same codec family Google's Squoosh uses. The output carries no metadata, so camera details and GPS location are removed. Read more in our privacy policy.
