Photos are usually the heaviest part of a web page. A WebP file is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than a JPG that looks the same, so turning your photos into WebP is one of the simplest ways to make a site faster. Smaller images mean shorter load times on slow phone connections, less bandwidth and better page speed scores.
Support is no longer a worry. Every current browser shows WebP, and Safari has done so since 2020.
How to use the JPG to WebP converter
- Drop your photos on the drop area or press Select JPG images. JPEG files work exactly the same way, because JPG and JPEG are one format with two spellings.
- Leave the quality on High for most photos. Pick Smaller for thumbnails, galleries and images you send in chats.
- Press Convert to WebP. Up to four photos convert at the same time, depending on your device.
- Compare the first photo with the before and after slider, then press Download WebP for one file or Download all as ZIP for the whole batch.
What changes in your photos
The picture itself looks the same, but a few things around it are cleaned up:
- Rotation is fixed. Phones often save a photo sideways and store a note to turn it. The tool applies that note, so every WebP comes out the right way up.
- Colors are made web safe. Color profiles are converted to sRGB, the color space browsers expect.
- Metadata is removed. Camera details and GPS location are not copied into the WebP. That is good for privacy when you post photos online. Keep your originals if you need that information.
Choosing a quality
High uses libwebp at quality 90 with sharp color conversion, which keeps skin tones, skies and fine edges looking right. Smaller squeezes the file further, and small details may soften.
Lossless is rarely worth it for photos. A JPG already gave up some detail when it was first saved, and a pixel perfect copy of it can end up bigger than the file you started with. Use it only when you plan to keep editing the image.

Need to convert a full media library? Press Select a folder or drop the folder on the drop area. Sub-folders are included and hidden files are skipped. You can add up to 300 images per batch, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels. A total line then shows the saving, for example "12 images, 8.4 MB down to 2.1 MB, 75% smaller", and every file lists its own size change.
You are not locked to one format. The same page can also make AVIF, PNG, JPG or SVG, and it reads PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP as well as JPG.
Private and on your device
This jpg to webp online converter runs entirely in your browser, inside Web Workers. Your photos are never uploaded. The encoder is libwebp, Google's own WebP library, compiled to WebAssembly. Details are in our privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Will WebP work everywhere I need it? It works in every current browser. Some older apps, printers and upload forms still want JPG, so keep your originals, or convert WebP to JPG when a form refuses the file.
Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos? HEIC opens only in browsers that can read it, such as Safari. In other browsers, export the photo as JPG first.
Is there something smaller than WebP? AVIF often is. Try JPG to AVIF and compare the sizes.
