AVIF is the newest image format for the web, newer than WebP. It is often about half the size of a JPG that looks the same, and it supports transparency, which JPG does not. For a website that means faster pages and a better page speed score without giving up the clear edges and see-through backgrounds that made you pick PNG in the first place. Screenshots, product shots on a transparent background, banners and illustrations all shrink a lot when you switch from PNG to AVIF.
How to convert PNG to AVIF
- Add your images. Drop PNG files or a whole folder on the drop area, or press Select PNG images or Select a folder. Sub-folders are included and hidden files are skipped. Up to 300 images fit in one batch, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels.
- Choose a quality. High is already selected and is the right pick for most images.
- Convert. Press Convert to AVIF. AVIF takes more work to encode than WebP, so big batches need more time. Up to four images convert at once, depending on your device.
- Download. Press Download AVIF for one file, or Download all as ZIP for several.
Which quality to pick
High looks the same as the original side by side and is much smaller. It keeps full color detail with no chroma subsampling, so colored text and thin lines stay sharp.
Smaller gives the smallest file. It is fine for web pages and chats, though small details may soften.
Lossless keeps every pixel. Use it for an archive copy or a graphic that must match exactly. Lossless AVIF can be larger than the PNG you started with, so for the web High is usually the better choice. The before and after slider and the size change on every file make it easy to see the trade.
Transparent PNG to AVIF
Transparency is kept in every quality mode. A logo or cutout on a see-through background stays see-through as an AVIF, with nothing filled in behind it. That is the main reason to choose AVIF over a JPG for these images. If you need a JPG anyway, for an app that does not read AVIF, you can convert PNG to JPG and choose a white or black background.
Browser and app support
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later all show AVIF, so it works for almost every visitor to your site. Older apps and some editors cannot open it yet. When you need the widest support with transparency, convert PNG to WebP instead. To open an AVIF in an older program, you can turn AVIF back into PNG.
How the converter works
This PNG to AVIF converter uses libavif with Google's libaom encoder, from the same codec family as Google's Squoosh, compiled to WebAssembly. Everything runs in Web Workers in your browser, and your images are never uploaded. Color profiles are converted to sRGB, 16-bit images become 8-bit, and all metadata is removed, so camera details and GPS location do not travel with the file. Read the privacy policy for more.
Frequently asked questions
Is PNG to AVIF lossless? Only if you pick Lossless. High and Smaller are lossy but built to look like the original.
Why is my AVIF bigger than the PNG? That can happen with Lossless, mostly on simple graphics. Switch to High and it will usually be much smaller.
Can I convert JPG or WebP files too? Yes. This page also reads JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. Animated images become their first frame. For photos, see the image tools.
