Why move your photos from JPG to AVIF

JPG has been the photo format of the web for decades, and it shows its age. AVIF is newer than both JPG and WebP, and it is often about half the size of a JPG at the same look. For a photo gallery, a blog, an online shop or a portfolio, that means pages that load faster on slow phones and less storage on your server. Converting JPG to AVIF is one of the simplest ways to make a site lighter without touching its design.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

Drop your JPG or JPEG photos on the drop area, or press Select JPG images. For a full shoot, drop the folder itself or press Select a folder. Photos in sub-folders are picked up and hidden files are skipped. One batch takes up to 300 photos, each up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels.

Leave the quality on High unless you have a reason to change it, then press Convert to AVIF. When the batch is done, check the first photo with the before and after slider, then press Download AVIF for one photo or Download all as ZIP for several. On a computer, a QR code beside the download button sends the result to your phone.

Give it a moment. AVIF is slower to encode than WebP, so a large batch takes longer than you may be used to. Up to four photos convert in parallel, depending on your device.

How small will the files get

It depends on the photo, so the tool shows you real numbers instead of promises. Every file lists its old and new size, and the total line sums up the whole batch. Here is what each quality does:

  • High looks the same as the original side by side and saves the most for its look. It keeps full color detail, so red flowers and blue sky do not bleed at the edges.
  • Smaller gives the smallest file, good for web pages and chats. Fine texture may soften.
  • Lossless keeps every pixel of the JPG. It is often bigger than the JPG itself, so it is only worth it when an exact copy matters.

A JPG to AVIF converter cannot add detail the JPG never had. It can only keep what is there in a smaller file.

Phone photos and privacy

Photos straight from a phone usually store their rotation in EXIF data. The converter applies it, so every AVIF comes out the right way up. Color profiles are converted to sRGB and 16-bit images become 8-bit. Camera details and GPS location are removed, which is worth knowing before you post photos taken at home.

Everything runs in your browser in Web Workers using libavif with Google's libaom encoder, compiled to WebAssembly. Your photos are never uploaded. The privacy policy explains what we do and do not collect.

Where AVIF works

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later show AVIF, which covers nearly every visitor. Some older apps and editors still cannot open it. If you need a format that opens in more places, convert JPG to WebP. To bring an AVIF back for an older program, you can turn AVIF into JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPEG to AVIF the same thing? Yes. JPEG and JPG are one format, and both file endings work here.

Should I delete my JPG originals? Keep them. AVIF is ideal for your site, but the originals are useful for printing and for apps that do not read AVIF yet.

Can I make other images into AVIF? Yes. PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP work on this page too, and for graphics with transparency there is a page to convert PNG to AVIF.

Your files stay on your device

Every tool runs inside your browser. The files you add are never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone at PieToolkit.
