You saved a photo from a website and it came out as an .avif file. Many sites serve AVIF now because the files are small. The problem is the other side: plenty of apps, print shops, editors and upload forms still turn AVIF away. JPG is the format every one of them accepts.
This AVIF to JPG converter changes your files into normal JPEG photos that open in any viewer, attach to any email and pass any upload form. It works for one picture or a folder full of them.
How to change AVIF to JPG
Drop your files on the drop area above, or press Select AVIF images or Select a folder. Dragging a whole folder in works too, sub-folders included, hidden files skipped. Then press Convert to JPG.
When it is done you see a total line with the sizes before and after, a before and after slider for the first image, and the size change of every file. Press Download JPG for one file or Download all as ZIP for several. On a computer, a QR code lets you send the JPGs straight to your phone.
Picking the JPG quality
The JPGs are made with MozJPEG, the encoder from Mozilla. It makes smaller JPG files than most apps at the same quality. You have three choices:
- Maximum gives the highest JPG quality with full color detail. Pick it for printing or for further editing.
- High is the default. Side by side with the AVIF you will not see a difference.
- Smaller saves more space when the file is going on the web or into a chat.
AVIF often packs a photo into less space than JPG can, so the JPG may come out a bit bigger than the AVIF. That is expected.
Transparent AVIF to JPEG
JPG has no transparency. If your AVIF has clear areas, they are filled with white or black, and you choose which. The result line tells you when this happened. If you need to keep a see-through background, use the AVIF to PNG converter instead.
Works on any browser, with no upload
The AVIF to JPG conversion happens on your device, in the background of the page. Your photos are never uploaded. Several images run side by side, up to four at once, depending on your device.
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or newer open AVIF on their own. If your browser cannot, a built-in AVIF decoder takes over. It is libaom compiled to WebAssembly, so even an older browser gets the job done.
Along the way the converter also:
- turns photos the right way up based on their rotation tag,
- converts color profiles to sRGB, so colors look right everywhere,
- turns HDR or 10 and 12 bit AVIF into regular 8 bit color,
- removes metadata such as camera details and GPS location.

Limits
A batch holds up to 300 images. Each can be up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels. With more than five files the list switches to small thumbnail tiles.
Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF to JPEG the same as AVIF to JPG? Yes. JPG and JPEG are two names for the same format.
Can I drop other file types here? Yes. PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP work as well. The real type is read from the file's bytes, so a wrong extension does not matter. Animated files give you their first frame.
Can I make WebP or PNG instead? Yes. Switch the output to WebP, AVIF, JPG, PNG or SVG. To turn a JPG into a smaller web image later, you can convert JPG to WebP. Browse all image tools for more converters.
Do I need an account? No. The AVIF to JPG online tool is free with no sign-in.
