What PNG to SVG really means

A PNG is made of pixels. Zoom in far enough and you see little squares. An SVG is made of shapes and curves, so it stays sharp at any size, from a favicon to a billboard.

Renaming a file or wrapping a PNG inside an SVG does not change that. This tool traces your image instead. It looks at the edges and areas of color and draws them again as real vector paths. That is what people mean when they ask to vectorize a PNG or turn a PNG into a vector.

How to convert PNG to SVG

  1. Drop your image on the drop area, or press Select PNG images. Use Select a folder to load many at once.
  2. Pick a style. Flat is the default.
  3. Press Convert to SVG and wait while each image is traced. It takes a moment on larger images.
  4. Look at the before and after slider, then press Download SVG for one file or Download all as ZIP for several.

You can convert PNG to SVG one file at a time or in bulk, up to 300 images in a batch.

Choosing a style

  • Flat turns the picture into flat color shapes. It is the best choice for logos, icons and illustrations, and it gives clean, small files.
  • Detailed keeps many colors and fine detail. Use it for photos and artwork. The files are larger.
  • Mono is black and white: it draws black shapes on a clear background. It suits signatures, line art and scanned drawings. The background is found for you, so a white logo on a blue square comes out as a black logo.

What to expect from the result

Tracing is not pixel-perfect. It rebuilds the picture as shapes, so some fine detail gets simplified.

Logos and flat artwork give the best results. The SVG comes out clean and small, and you can scale it to any size without blur. Transparent areas stay transparent.

Photos work too, but they turn into a painted look, and a detailed photo can make a very large SVG file. If you only need a smaller photo, you can convert PNG to WebP instead and keep the pixels.

Tip: a clean source image with sharp edges traces best. Small logos and icons are enlarged before tracing, so their curves come out smooth, and JPG noise and the soft pixels along edges are cleaned up first. A very blurry image still gives softer, rounder shapes, so use the sharpest copy you have.

The tracer behind it

This PNG to SVG converter uses vtracer, an open source tracer written in Rust under the MIT license. It is the same tracer CloudConvert uses for PNG to SVG. Here it is compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside your browser. Your images are never uploaded, and up to four images trace side by side depending on your device. Read the privacy policy for the details.

Image to SVG from other formats

The page is not only for PNG. You can trace JPG and WebP into SVG as well, so it works as a JPG to SVG or general image to SVG tool. AVIF, GIF and BMP are accepted too. The real file type is read from the file's bytes, not its name. Animated files give you their first frame.

Each image can be up to 100 MB and 100 megapixels. Very large images take longer to trace, and a clean, medium size image often gives a better result anyway.

Where you can use the SVG

SVG files open in every web browser and in design apps such as Figma, Illustrator and Inkscape, where you can edit each shape and color. You can put them on a website, print them at any size, or use them with cutting machines such as Cricut and Silhouette and with laser engravers. Results depend on your machine and its software, so test with a small piece first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SVG a real vector or just a picture inside an SVG? It is a real vector. Every part is a path you can select and edit.

Why is my SVG larger than the PNG? A photo or a detailed image creates many small shapes. Try the Flat style, use a cleaner image, or keep that image as a raster file.

Can I get the picture as a PDF instead? Yes, a PNG goes into a PDF with the PNG to PDF converter.

Can I switch to other output formats? Yes. The output can be WebP, AVIF, JPG, PNG or SVG on this page. See all image tools for more.
